Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) is a primary
tool in lymphedema management. Lymphedema is a condition of
localized fluid retention caused by a compromised lymphatic
system. Lymphedema can be inherited or caused by injury. It
is frequently seen after surgery or radiation therapy, in
which damage to the lymphatic system is caused during the
treatment of cancer, particularly breast cancer. The goal
of MLD is to improve or restore lymph drainage that has become
impaired. MLD uses gentle massage-like techniques to stimulate
lymph flow.
